The International Union of Operating Engineers has been conducting a survey of Florida crane operators since May 2009. Our survey has clearly shown that Beyel Brothers does not meet wage and benefit area standards. Total compensation for Beyel operators, which includes health and retirement benefits, is as much as $10 per hour less than union operators in Florida.

Beyel Brothers does not, of course, exist in a vacuum. Beyel is part of a “race to the bottom” among several Florida crane rental companies, all of whom are or will be included on this website.

The race to the bottom does not exist in a vacuum, either. It is driven by the general contractors, concrete companies and other customers of crane rental companies, who help undercut the living standards of the entire community.

The constant pressure to squeeze out the lowest possible bid – regardless of quality, safety or the treatment of workers – enables and in fact encourages crane rental companies to undercut wage and benefit standards.

The IUOE requests that Beyel Brothers customers urge the company to meet area standards, and discontinue doing business with Beyel until they meet those standards. The IUOE is not seeking to represent the employees of Beyel Brothers. It is simply trying to persuade the company to meet, and not undercut, area standards.
